Horsham Tri Club Race Series 2017

The 2017 Club Championship is upon us. Here is a list of events. Please see a list of the scoring/rules etc. and if you have any question please ask away.
Roger James has very kindly volunteered to manage the series this year. Thanks you in advance Roger!

There is a change from 2016 in that there will be a separate long distance award. This incorporates and middle and long distance events, these can be of your choice and there is no limit to the amount you can compete in and then submit your results. ‘Iron’ distance events score double that of ‘half/middle’ distance events.

The Races

Cowdray Park X-Duathlon
It’s off road so any form of mountain bike or probably cross & gravel or maybe even town bike will do (just leave you fancy TT’s at home for this one). A new event run by […]

Horsham Tri Club win Three Molehills Relay

This gruelling annual race is based at Denbies wine estate in Dorking and consists of 3 legs. The first being the lung busting 270 steps to the top of Box Hill totalling 4.5 miles this year run by Alex Smith , the second being the gentler but longer run (6 miles) to Norbury Park was taken on by Tom Payne followed by the shortest leg to Ranmore Common tackled by Jamie Newton. This year’s event was a particularly cold and windy day but luckily the rain held off.
Smith quickly gained a lead and this was built upon over the 3 legs with the team finishing first, over 13 minutes up on the second placed team.
Horsham Tri Club member Michael Dargue also completed the 14.4 mile race as a solo entry and came an amazing 14th out of a […]

Club Coach competes in Mexico

Paul Blackmore recently competed in the triathlon World Age Group Sprint championships in Cozumel, Mexico, the same place, and heat, where Alistair helped Jonny Brownlee cross the finish line in the triathlon Grand Final.

Paul, who is a level 2 coach with Horsham Tri Club, finished 9th in his age group, out of 82, and was the first of the 20 athletes representing Great Britain. Athletes from around the world, including USA and Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and of course Mexico completed the 750 metre swim, 20 kilometre bike ride and 5 kilometre run. Horsham Tri Club at Southwater Relay 2016.

At the beginning of September members from Horsham Tri Club took part in the annual sprint relay triathlon at Southwater Lake.
This is always a popular event within the club with some teams entering to compete for the fastest times while most compete just for fun, soaking up the warm friendly atmosphere. Some 30 members entered in teams of three, all completing the 400mtr lake swim, 18km bike course and the 3.8km run before handing over to the next team member.
The fastest club team time was 2hr 53mins and came eighth out of 116 teams.

Race Report: Arundel Castle Triathlon 26/06/2016

By Tina Miller

I am pretty sure that when the 7 members of HTC signed up for the 3rd running of Arundel Castle Standard triathlon we never dreamed we would have finished it before 8.30am!
The swim takes place in the River Arun, which is one of the fastest flowing rivers in England and is also tidal. There is a period of ‘slack tide’ when the river doesn’t flow quite as fast and on this particular day slack tide was around 5am for a period of about 40 mins. Hence the ridiculously early start. Registration opened at 4am and the first wave of swimmers were due to go off at 5:15am.
Apparently in previous years competitors walked 1.5km upstream and then swam back. But as the organisers were up against it time wise to get the swim completed before […]

Haslemere ‘Bumpy’ Triathlon

Written by Dave Youngman

I don’t normally write race reports, but I raced Haslemere ‘Bumpy’ Triathlon on Sunday 5th June, which is an event run by REP (also do Steyning, Arundel etc). This was only the 2nd year it has run and thought I would put it out there as a welcoming, fun and low-key event, where ‘Bumpy’ is the key word in the title, which I will be adding to the calendar for next year.

I got there early as there were concerns with parking space in the event emails, though in the end there was plenty of space (I was parked 30m from transition and my bike). Registration was slower than the normal from REP, but a 5 minute queue was as bad as it got. You also get a t-shirt as normal for REP events.

The swim is a 400m […]

Aquathlon Series Off To Flying Start

Horsham Tri Club’s annual aquathlon series got off to a great start at the weekend with competitors taking part in the 200mtr pool swim followed be either a 3.6km or 5km run around Horsham Park. The glorious sunshine made the event even better with some good times recorded by those competing in their first event. For those coming back from last year’s events it was a good test to see if any improvements had been made. Competitor Gary Tomlinson said “It was a lot of fun and good motivation to go and work on my swimming technique! I’ve booked in for May’s event to see if I can make some progress over the next month”.
The next event is on Saturday 7th May and further details can be found at horshamtriclub.co.uk/events/go-tri-events/

Anglian Water Sprint and Standard Duathlons – Grafham Water, Cambridgeshire

By Tina Miller

To give me added motivation to train through the winter I entered Windsor Duathlon early this year and then thought I might as well do a couple more prior to that one and make Windsor the ‘A’ race as it were.

I used to live in Huntingdon so the Anglian Water Standard duathlon at Grafham Water reservoir (Nice Tri Events) seemed a good opportunity to go back to an old stomping ground, race and meet up with some friends.

The venue is ideal, right beside a huge reservoir, set in 2,400 acres of countryside with tracks and trails all around the water.  Transition was based at one end of a large car park with access to changing rooms, toilets and a cafe.

Both the runs and the bike leg are out and back courses. A quick drive of the bike course […]

A Great Turnout For The Brighton Half

Five months of hard training paid off for Horsham Triathlon Club members last Sunday as they scooped up medals and personal bests at the Brighton Half Marathon.

Over a third of the club took part in specially designed training plans for three different finishing times of sub 1hr 35, sub 1hr 50 and sub 2hr 15. It was the first year the club had attempted anything like this and with the exception of a couple of members taking a few weeks out for injuries everyone who started the plan completed it.

Chairman of HTC John Birkens said after the race “I am so proud of the club today. Practically every member got a PB and the best part was that everyone finished with a smile of their face.”

A Great Turnout for the 25th Chichester 10k Road Race

Horsham Tri Club saw an excellent turnout for the 25th Chichester 10k race on Sunday 7th Feb. It was perfect running weather with sunny but crisp conditions and with 20 members competing it promised to be a great morning. Horsham Tri Club were using the race as final preparation for the upcoming Brighton Half Marathon, for which we have a 2.15hr & 1.50hr training group.

Many smashed their personal bests with particular note going to GB age-grouper Paul Blackmore who finished in 37.52 & Luke McPherson who, aged 15, raced in his first 10k in an extremely respectable time of 48.24.
