johnCurrently the elder statesman of the club but not in my mind old, I’ve been involved in triathlon since 2007.   Whilst training for the 2007 London Marathon I picked up an injury that resulted in dropping out and entering the London Olympic distance triathlon.   As I could barely swim, there followed a few frantic phone calls for lessons and from there on haven’t looked back.

My first event was the Steyning sprint where I somehow managed not to come last, but the seed was sown and despite a couple of key road races have concentrated on tri ever since.

Initially, training on my own, I found the races great fun with the camaraderie first class. I had a couple of seasons with an online coach (thanks Nikki) where I improved beyond recognition and in 2010 completed my first Ironman (Switzerland Zurich).   It wasn’t quick or particularly pretty but it was an amazing day, completed by having my family ‘on course’ offering lots of encouragement.

I joined HTC in 2011 and under the guidance of James and Chris have really enjoyed the social side of group training as well as further improvement in performance.

With the coaching team helping all the way I completed my second Iron distance event in July 2012 The Outlaw based in Nottingham.
I find my triathlon experience is about the enjoyment of training and the battle to be the best I can in every race. I may never win, but I have great fun (and some pain) along the way.
