Horsham Tri Club Race Series 2017

The 2017 Club Championship is upon us. Here is a list of events. Please see a list of the scoring/rules etc. and if you have any question please ask away.
Roger James has very kindly volunteered to manage the series this year. Thanks you in advance Roger!

There is a change from 2016 in that there will be a separate long distance award. This incorporates and middle and long distance events, these can be of your choice and there is no limit to the amount you can compete in and then submit your results. ‘Iron’ distance events score double that of ‘half/middle’ distance events.

The Races

Cowdray Park X-Duathlon
It’s off road so any form of mountain bike or probably cross & gravel or maybe even town bike will do (just leave you fancy TT’s at home for this one). A new event run by […]

Horsham Tri Club win Three Molehills Relay

This gruelling annual race is based at Denbies wine estate in Dorking and consists of 3 legs. The first being the lung busting 270 steps to the top of Box Hill totalling 4.5 miles this year run by Alex Smith , the second being the gentler but longer run (6 miles) to Norbury Park was taken on by Tom Payne followed by the shortest leg to Ranmore Common tackled by Jamie Newton. This year’s event was a particularly cold and windy day but luckily the rain held off.
Smith quickly gained a lead and this was built upon over the 3 legs with the team finishing first, over 13 minutes up on the second placed team.
Horsham Tri Club member Michael Dargue also completed the 14.4 mile race as a solo entry and came an amazing 14th out of a […]

The fastest club team time was 2hr 53mins and came eighth out of 116 teams.

Aquathlon Series Off To Flying Start

Horsham Tri Club’s annual aquathlon series got off to a great start at the weekend with competitors taking part in the 200mtr pool swim followed be either a 3.6km or 5km run around Horsham Park. The glorious sunshine made the event even better with some good times recorded by those competing in their first event. For those coming back from last year’s events it was a good test to see if any improvements had been made. Competitor Gary Tomlinson said “It was a lot of fun and good motivation to go and work on my swimming technique! I’ve booked in for May’s event to see if I can make some progress over the next month”.
The next event is on Saturday 7th May and further details can be found at horshamtriclub.co.uk/events/go-tri-events/

A Great Turnout For The Brighton Half

Five months of hard training paid off for Horsham Triathlon Club members last Sunday as they scooped up medals and personal bests at the Brighton Half Marathon.

Over a third of the club took part in specially designed training plans for three different finishing times of sub 1hr 35, sub 1hr 50 and sub 2hr 15. It was the first year the club had attempted anything like this and with the exception of a couple of members taking a few weeks out for injuries everyone who started the plan completed it.

Chairman of HTC John Birkens said after the race “I am so proud of the club today. Practically every member got a PB and the best part was that everyone finished with a smile of their face.”

Worthing triathlon

Well to everyone who was at todays Worthing Triathlon. The conditions were certainly testing from start to finish.
We had a few 1st time sea swimmers today in what was pretty ‘interesting ‘ conditions. A great effort just to get through that. I hope you all enjoyed the race. A special mention to Christopher Keeler and Kath Wright who gave us great support in addition to marshaling in what ended up really unpleasant weather. I’m sure you’ll join me in thanking all the marshals for their efforts out there.

A great showing from all club members in pretty poor conditiions…Well done everyone!

Ironman Austria 28th June 2015

Chairman John Birkens

After twice saying never again for some reason I yet again decided that I still had an unfulfilled Ironman dream that needed looking at. So, as Austria was always the race I wanted to try, in July 2014 I duly paid my money and started hatching my planned assault. Initially, there were a few other members who expressed an interest but gradually these disappeared with excuses such as I’m getting married (Duncan) and I’d prefer to go to Challenge Roth (G). So, in the end, it was Jason Rogers and I who made the trip.

I worked hard in September/October on writing my 30 wk programme which was based on previous experience and research in to the area I needed to improve. Finally the programme was set and around came the start date 1st December, June 28th seemed a […]

Ironman 70.3 UK Wimbleball Lake – Sunday 28th June 2015.

Coach Duncan.

I had entered this race back in 2014 but unfortunately some calf issues led me to pulling out. The family and I went down to watch the event basking in the blazing sun though, and instantly I was hooked. The moment the race for 2015 opened – I was in!

My training officially began on 5th January and continued pretty much on plan for the next 3 1/2 months. 2 swims, 2 bikes and 2 runs per week with the odd race and sportive thrown in for good measure.

At the end of April I switched jobs and unfortunately (for my training) ended up commuting back to London. This reduced me pretty much down to 1 of each discipline per week and I felt my fitness suffer pretty quickly. It was also the year of the 40th birthday party and (in […]
